From Awareness to Action: Wise Amewuda’s Rise as a Nutrition Advocate
In Franco, Ghana, a young teacher trainee is proving that education can do more than shape the mind. It can transform entire communities. His journey toward healthier living started with his participation in AfriCAN’s “Good Nutrition Starts with Me” training, in 2024.

Prior to the training, Wise said that he only had a basic understanding of healthy  diets and how they influence daily well-being. But the knowledge he gained now, opened his eyes to a critical truth: malnutrition doesn’t just weaken the body; it holds back a child’s future. This discovery reshaped his purpose.

Although Wise was pursuing a bachelor’s degree in education, the impact of the training was so profound that he decided to focus his final research paper on the effects of malnutrition on students’ academic performance. He wanted evidence to support what he had come to believe: that good nutrition is essential for learning.

Further determined to live the change he advocates, Wise began transforming his lifestyle. Today, he consciously prepares nutritious meals using a wide variety of affordable, locally sourced foods. He has also established a small backyard garden where he grows fresh vegetables like okra, kontomire (cocoyam leaves), and tomatoes, a practical step toward food self-sufficiency. Yet his greatest impact lies beyond his own plate.

Wise shares his knowledge with peers and younger students, teaching them simple practices for improved nutrition and hygiene. His confidence, dedication, and growing leadership have made him a role model among fellow teacher trainees and community members. One conversation at a time, he is inspiring others to prioritize their health.

Wise’s story reflects the true power of education: when knowledge moves into action, lives change. From a curious trainee to a champion of nutrition, Wise is nurturing a healthier future, not just for himself, but for everyone around him.
