AfriCAN – Africa Catalyzing Action for Nutrition was established on the belief that Africa’s greatest potential for solving its nutrition challenges lies within its people, especially its youth. Through its “Good Nutrition Starts with Me” Youth Initiative, the youth in Ghana are transforming knowledge into action, using creativity, innovation, and community spirit to build a healthier future for themselves, their peers and families.

Following the training of 51 youth and 25 media practitioners, they were inspired and motivated to sign the AfriCAN Commitment Card, pledging to champion better nutrition in their communities, starting with themselves and their households.

In Hohoe, those commitments have translated into action with initiatives as diverse as they are impactful: sensitizing peers and community members on the importance of good nutrition; establishing Nutrition Clubs in schools to mentor younger students; and creating backyard gardens that bring fresh, healthy food closer to home.

Among these efforts, one initiative stands out named “Growing Change” where even the smallest home spaces have been turned into flourishing gardens, using containers and baskets to grow underutilized but highly nutritious crops. The approach is simple yet transformative: making the most of what’s available to improve what’s essential – access to healthy food.

In Ho, four of the trained youth took their commitments even further by forming a School Nutrition Education Group called Nutri-impact Ambassadors, working with regional and municipal nutrition officers to make nutrition education fun, engaging, and accessible for schoolchildren.

So far, they have reached six schools (AME Zion, Sonrise, Royal Praise, St. Cecelia, HTU Basic, and Ho International School), where they have inspired many students and teachers through interactive sessions on the 4-Star Diet and even nutrition rhymes for younger learners. In this way, they are nurturing a new generation that understands the power of healthy eating.

These young leaders are proving that meaningful change can begin with small yet consistent actions. They are also showing that the fight against malnutrition isn’t just about food; it’s about hope, creativity, and the courage to grow change, one individual, one household and one community at a time.

The Seeds of Change are Planted. Together, let’s help them grow.
